Murder at The Abbey

The longest evening of the year, and the ruins of Titchfield Abbey are golden with it. There is bunting, there is a hamper from the Bugle, and there is a curious company gathered on the grass: the Minister of Agriculture, come to hand over the keys; the Office of Works, come to take them; a celebrated archaeologist with his aerial photographs and his awkward questions; a proud local historian who would rather the whole business had never begun. For the first time in four centuries, the spades go into the cloister.

They never get the chance. As dusk gathers under the great gatehouse, a carved stone falls from high above and the Abbey claims her custodian, just as the old legend always said she would. The company calls it an accident. The village calls it the curse. You may come to call it something else entirely.
