When three witches reveal their prophecy on the heath, Macbeth does whatever it takes to become king of Scotland. Driven by his desire to rule, a savage darkness consumes the hearts of the treacherous warrior and his wife. Corruption and an insatiable greed for power lead to death and destruction in Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy.
As part of Ports Fest festival for 2022 we bring you the haunting atmospheric play in a suitable surrounding.
Bring a chair and a picnic and enjoy watching Shakespeare as he first saw it performed, in the open air. The immersive performance will take place in the stunning setting of the Inner Bailey of the castle. We encourage you to join the feast, bring a picnic, and take a spot on the grass area as you watch the play happen all around you.
For those feeling very brave you can book a seat at the banqueting table itself, sitting next to the characters and place yourself in the heart of the action!
Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July has sold out. A new date has been added for 3rd July at 18:30 start.
Further Information
The doors to the Inner Bailey of the Castle will open at 7pm to allow the audience to get set up inside on the grass area. This open-air performance will happen all around you in the atmospheric setting of the palace and castle courtyard. It will start in daylight and finish at dusk. The performance will continue regardless of weather, so please bring suitable clothing and shoes. Parking for the Castle are the two car parks near the entrance – spaces are limited, especially closer to the castle, so you may need to allow extra time to park. There are no toilets within the castle so we recommend the use of the toilets in the car park, which will request to be left open until 9pm. We do recommend that you bring a blanket, cushions or chairs to sit on and perhaps a few blankets to wrap yourself up as the evening chill sets in. Please do bring your own refreshments for the performance or even picnic. The stewards will ask anyone with chairs to sit slightly back from the action so that the actors can move around the group. Please do not bring a BBQ or any flammable items as they will not be allowed inside the Castle. Once the performance finishes you will be escorted out of the castle. At this point the outer Bailey will be dark so we recommended you bring torches and to take care as you make your way back to your car. Please remember to take your rubbish home after you.
